Rasco’s Origin Story

Rugged. Reliable. Rasco.

“It started in a garage with only a folding table and a dream.”

1988: It Started in a Garage…

Like many businesses, it started in a garage with only a folding table and a dream. There was no pomp and circumstance. No hard launch. No announcement on social media. Granted, it was 1988, and the internet was barely a thing at that point.

It’d been nineteen years since John Fogerty’s voice had first belted out the words to Creedence Clearwater Revival’s 1969 classic “Born on the Bayou,” but as far as we’re concerned, his words had never rung truer, at least not in the suburbs of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the moment when Rasco was born. In the early hours of a summer morning, we flipped on the light in our garage and thought, “Here goes nothing...”

“Our first product was the welding cap. Demand surged, and the product lineup grew quickly from there.”

It Took a Leap of Faith...

Turns out our little leap of faith worked. Our first product was the welding cap. They came in multiple colors, and every one was reversible. We produced them as quickly as we could using old Singer sewing machines. The machines were leftovers from a bygone era when ready-made garments weren’t in as high demand as they are today, but it didn’t matter. They had good bones and withstood every test we put them through.

It was hard to keep up with the demand, and it wasn’t helped by the fact that most of the time, customers didn’t order them one or two at a time, they bought packs. We were selling welding caps by the half or full dozen. With this high demand came the need for more space and help. So, we moved out of the garage and into a real office with a proper warehouse. We hired more staff to answer the phones—they seemingly never stopped ringing—and to fulfill orders as they poured in. When we weren’t talking to customers, packing up orders, or sewing caps, we were thinking about what came next. That led to our first catalogs.

“The small company that’d started in a garage was now something more.”

From Welding Caps to FR Workwear

The product lineup quickly grew. We kept making welding caps but added shirts, pants, and additional headgear such as balaclavas and fleece hats. Word traveled fast, and customers started demanding we make flame resistant workwear. As always, we heeded the call, and in 2001, we released our first flame resistant clothing.

That’s when things really started to churn. Traditionally, we’d sold exclusively to small mom and pop stores across Louisiana and Texas. But word spread quickly, and shortly thereafter, we expanded into New Mexico, California, Wyoming, and North Dakota. At the same time, we started attending tradeshows across the United States and Canada. Now the calls weren’t just coming from the smaller stores with one location. No, we started receiving calls from multinational conglomerates with hundreds of locations.

The small company that’d started in a garage was now something more. It’d grown into a full-fledged brand—one that customers trusted and came back to, time and time again.

From Louisiana to Everywhere

We’d started off making gear for welders, but today, we're proud to be trusted by industrial workers, oilfield crews, utility teams, welders, and just about anyone else who needs to stay protected when the heat gets real. As demand grew beyond the United States, we opened a distribution center in Winnipeg, Manitoba, supported by a local team serving our Canadian customers and providing additional support to our U.S. operations.

We’ve had several different versions of the Rasco logo and continue to use multiple variations to this day.

The Mark Changed. The Mission Didn’t.

Protection Shouldn’t Come at the Expense of Style & Comfort

Protection shouldn’t come at the expense of comfort. We build FR clothing that’s independently tested, third-party certified, and designed to move through the workday and whatever comes after it. If your workwear feels like medieval armor, you’re doing it wrong. Our lightweight fabrics, innovative designs, and modern fits let you move, flex, and breathe all day long.

It never made sense to us that you had to wear one shirt to work and then change into a different one for dinner that night. We want the transition from your workday to home life to be seamless. That’s why we make FR clothing that looks so good you don’t want to take it off when you leave the jobsite.

Your job requires you to wear FR clothing. Our job is to make it stylish, comfortable, and safe.

Industrial Strength. Small Team Hustle.

We don’t want to be another company contributing to the annoyance economy. We get it. We’re consumers too. We’ve all had bad experiences with companies that try to nickel and dime us at every turn.

When you come to our site, we look at it like you’re stepping into our store. If something doesn’t fit, of course you can exchange it for another size. That’s exactly what you’d be able to do if you walked into a Rasco store, and shopping online shouldn’t be any different.

We pride ourselves on having responsive customer service, fast shipping, and a team that knows the FR world and workwear inside and out. We treat every order like it’s mission-critical.
