Heavier Fabric — standard FR shirts use 7–8 oz fabric. The welding bay demands more. The FR Heavyweight Work Shirt uses 11.5 oz FR Flameshield® duck canvas with a 20 cal arc rating — the highest of any shirt in our line. Full Coverage — a coverall or bib overall is the welder's garment. One piece, no gap between your shirt and pants where spatter finds skin. Common questions:
Does a welder need FR clothing? Yes — welding creates arc flash and flash fire hazards that require NFPA 2112 or NFPA 70E compliant protection. OSHA 1910.269 and many industry-specific standards require FR clothing for welders working in environments with electrical hazards.
What CAT rating do I need for welding? Most welding environments require CAT 2 as a minimum. For high-energy arc welding or environments with elevated electrical exposure, CAT 3 or CAT 4 may be required by your safety program. Use the CAT Rating filter above to shop by your protection level.
Can I wear regular cotton under my FR coverall? Yes — 100% cotton is acceptable as an underlayer in most programs. Polyester, nylon, and synthetic blends are not — they melt against skin when the FR outer layer is exposed. An FR base layer eliminates this risk entirely.
